How to find the appropriate protection bollards for traffic safety

When motor vehicles operate in public areas or forklifts on industrial premises, it is important to secure certain areas and hazardous zones with the help of impact protection equipment. By using sturdy crash protection bollards at critical points such as driveways, curves or building corners for example, you can effectively protect people, storage facilities, machinery or parts of buildings.

With collision protection bollards, you clearly separate traffic routes and pedestrian areas and prevent collision damage to gates or building corners by cars, stacker trucks, forklifts and other material handling equipment. At Jungheinrich PROFISHOP, you will find a wide range of different impact protection products with which you can reliably and effectively secure indoor and outdoor areas.

1. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use

Impact protection bollard, diameter 90 mm

Depending on the model, our crash protection bollards are made of steel or solid plastics such as polyethylene (PE). In most cases, both versions can be used equally well indoors and outdoors. Models that are exclusively intended for indoor use are marked accordingly in the product description.

For outdoor use, models made of hot-dip galvanized high-grade steel are particularly suitable, as this material is particularly resilient and corrosion-resistant. Impact protection made of stainless steel is rather rare in the industrial sector, as the material is significantly more expensive than conventional steel. Therefore, stainless steel bollards and barrier posts are mainly used in representative areas, where aesthetics are just as important as safety.

Many of our ram protection products have a steel core with a coating of hard plastic such as HDPE. Some not only feature warning markings in black and yellow, but also a fluorescent surface. This makes them immediately visible even in the dark or in poor lighting conditions.

2. Choose static or flexible bollards for collision protection

Type of bollard Bollard type
Static impact protection bollards Impact protection bollard, Ø 273 mm

  • Available in various diameters
  • Available in wall thicknesses up to 20mm
  • Impact energy is cushioned by plastic-coated steel pipe
  • Height above ground: up to 1600mm

Flexible impact protection bollards with tilting angle Swing impact protection bollard, indoor use, rotating
  • Flexible model with swing function
  • Steel coil spring progressively distributes impact energy
  • Bollard can tilt up to 25° upon collision
  • Less damage is caused to the industrial vehicle upon collision
  • Self-righting

3. Crash protection bollards for surface mounting or setting in concrete

When securely installing a bollard as a protective measure, there are two mounting options available to you. At Jungheinrich PROFISHOP, you can purchase models for surface mounting or setting in concrete.

For surface mounting, the protection bollard is screwed into the ground along with a sturdy base plate. Concrete screws are particularly suitable for this type of installation, as they can be firmly screwed in and provide the bollard with a solid base support. What's particularly convenient is that the screws can be removed easily if needed, allowing for temporary use and quick removal.

Additionally, we also offer bollards that can be permanently fixed into the ground by setting them in concrete. We recommend that you lay the concrete foundation at a depth of between 40 and 60cm below the surface to fix the cross anchor of the protection bollard securely. This ensures that the bollard remains stable as a crash barrier and cannot be knocked over, even in the event of an impact.

Collage style Advantages Disadvantages
Surface-mounted bollards for bolting
  • Easy, fast and secure installation
  • More cost-effective option if the ground is suitable and sufficiently load-bearing
  • Quick replacement or removal possible
  • Not suitable for use on porous or uneven ground
  • The weight limits may be lower depending on the condition of the ground
In-ground bollards for embedding in concrete
  • More suitable for long-term use
  • Thanks to their concrete foundation, they are more durable than surface-mounted models
  • More expensive and labour-intensive installation
  • They cannot be replaced or removed as quickly

4. Purchase accessories for bollards and complementary products

Among the Jungheinrich PROFISHOP product range, you can purchase suitable accessories to comprehensively secure all indoor and outdoor areas. In addition to dowels and expansion anchors for mounting crash protection bollards on concrete floors, we offer the following complementary products for the protection of people and operational equipment:

  • Impact protection barriers as a safety measure for work areas, e.g., to ensure a sufficient safety distance between people and vehicles on the factory premises.
  • Impact protection railings that can be used to separate pedestrian and vehicle zones, as well as provide fall protection.
  • Column protectors to cushion collisions, ideal for busy factories as a supplement to bollards for trucks, forklifts and other vehicles.
  • Corner protection for cushioning corners and edges, e.g., on railings, in passageways or on pipes.
