How to choose the right cable ramps

Loose and unprotected cables, on the construction site or in public spaces, can pose a significant health and safety risk, both as a tripping hazard or through damage caused to the wires themselves. Cable and chord protector ramps offer the best solution, protecting cables from damage from foot or vehicle traffic, as well as minimising the risk of tripping. Our heavy-duty cable ramps are made from robust materials suitable for use in demanding indoor and outdoor facilities and offer up to six recesses for the safe and orderly placement of cables.

1. Select cable protectors by type

In the Jungheinrich PROFISHOP store, you will find a wide range of models that meet the specific requirements and conditions of your site, from the threshold cable protector for indoor use to the more heavy-duty cable protector ramp, suitable for indoor and outdoor use, including heavy vehicle traffic. Browse our collection:

Cable Protector Type Properties and area of application
Threshold cable protector (indoor) Threshold cable protector
  • PVC cable protector defends against cable damage
  • Enables safe access to indoor areas by securing loose cables, wires and chords
  • ideal for use in workplaces or residential spaces
  • Adjustable lengths to meet your requirements
  • Available with yellow caution stripes for improved visibility
  • NOTE: cannot be driven over by a car or forklift
Threshold cable protector (indoor and outdoor) Cable bridge with 5 ducts, interconnectable
  • Heavy-duty and non-slip cable protector ramp
  • resistant to oil, acid, petrol and short-term contact with solvents
  • Built-in carry handles for easy transport
  • Available in high-visibility, two-tone models and single-colour variants
  • Can be used flexibly indoors and outdoors (e.g., on construction sites, in warehouses or exhibition halls)
  • Suitable for heavy-duty vehicles, like stacker trucks

2. Determine the number and type of recesses needed

In order to safely accommodate all cables or hoses within the cable ramp, the number and size of the cable ducts must be considered. At Jungheinrich PROFISHOP, you will find narrow and low-height, minimal-profile cable ramps with only one cable duct to protect individual cables and wires, as well as wide models with up to six cable channels or a particularly large diameter for accommodating A and C-type hoses.

Depending on the product variant, the cables can be passed through the hose bridges in several ways. We have cable ramp models with an open base design, allowing them to slide over cables quickly and easily. This is particularly useful for wide cables or when there are only a small number of cables that need to be protected. For variants that can accommodate up to six cables, these are placed in the recesses from above, providing greater all-round protection.

Please note: The number of conduits should be selected appropriately to avoid overloading the cable protector with too many cables or hoses.

3. Buy cable protector ramps made from the right materials

The best-fit material for cable ramps depends on various factors. This includes, among other things, the location of use and the expected load. The following material variants are available:

  • PVC: If you want to buy rubber cable protector ramps for indoor and pedestrian use only, a variant made of PVC typically offers sufficient protection. Many versions can also be individually cut to length.
  • Solid rubber and polyurethane (PU): If looking for an outdoor cable protector suitable for pedestrian and vehicle traffic, weather-resistant and heavy-duty materials are recommended. A textured surface also ensures improved slip and tread resistance.

In addition, always consider the maximum load capacity when choosing a cable ramp. This should never be exceeded in order to avoid damage to the cable protector and enclosed cables.

4. Flexible routing of multiple cable protector elements

Most of the cable protector ramps in our shop utilise a modular plug-in system, which means expandable main and basic elements can be interconnected as needed, depending on your requirements. You can buy cable protectors from us in the following designs:

  • Straight main or basic elements
  • End pieces with a groove or tenon

From straight elements and end pieces, you can assemble stable, continuous cable routes that precisely meet your onsite needs.

5. FAQ about cable ramps

When laying cable ramps, the following points must be observed:

  • Suitable cable protectors should be selected according to their intended use, considering durability, number of cable ducts and load capacity.
  • A permit is needed to lay outdoor cable protectors in public traffic areas.
  • If cable protectors need to be laid over longer distances, a modular plug-in system should be selected. This allows the cable transfer to be aligned as required and without vulnerabilities.
  • The cable protector ramp should always be properly secured to the intended surface (e.g., by screwing or glueing it to the floor.
  • Signal colours and non-slip surfaces are particularly useful for pedestrian traffic. Additionally, cable ramps also ensure accessibility.

The use of cable and hose bridges in public traffic areas is subject to approval and requires a special-use permit, which is often related to additional requirements (e.g., marking with warning signs or speed limits). In doing so, the applicable, country-specific road traffic regulations are considered. On the other hand, there are no specific legal barriers to the installation of cable protectors on private property.

Many cable protectors can be used universally for routing cables and hoses. In addition to conventional cable protectors for routing flat cables and electrical cables, there are also special hose bridges for hoses and pipelines that handle the delivery of liquids or gases. They usually have more spacious and deeper recesses to safely accommodate hoses with a large diameter. In addition, most hose bridges are also suitable for heavy goods traffic, such as trucks and goods-transportation vehicles.
